Red Shirt Project, About:

Over the years, The Red Shirt Project has undertaken many tasks: built a baseball field for the village; built a pow-wow arbor, installed and repaired fences and signage; built ramps to buildings so that the elderly and disabled can access them in wheelchairs; added air conditioning where it was sorely needed; and most recently in 2012 The Project built a new playground for the children of the village, and in 2013 we added a much needed cattle guard and built a memorial to our recently departed beloved founder, Deane Winant.

Typically, each summer the group will divide its time and resources between offering summer camp like sessions for the Lakota children, and working on projects to help the villagers (particularly the children and the elderly). The group also has a strong relationship with the local Episcopal Church, and has regularly assisted in maintainance and improvement of the Church and its facilities.

Each year the group has ample opportunity during the trip to interact with and learn from the Lakota, personal time to visit the many local attractions, and bonding time for the group as well.

While the Project was mainly active 1998-2014/15, it is hoped that a sponsoring church may emerge to help the Project re-start supporting the children and mothers of Red Shirt who are still among the poorest, most abused, most at-risk, and over-looked in all US society.

The Red Shirt Project has a "sister" ministry (also known as Red Shirt Project) that each year takes youth from Southern California to Red Shirt. That ministry is coordinated by Rev. Robert Two Bulls and Rev. Michael Cunningham and more information about it can be found at: www.redshirtproject.org
